  What is diabetes mellitus?

  Diabetes mellitus is a group of diseases whose common denominator is the alteration of blood sugar levels. This metabolic disorder originates when the pancreas cannot make enough insulin or when the body cannot process it properly (insulin resistance). The type of diabetes is determined by the cause that causes hyperglycemia. Although there are several types of diabetes mellitus, the most frequent are type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is characterized by an absolute lack of insulin production, while type 2 diabetes is characterized by a reduction in the action of insulin.
