For most of the first period the Jets played the Blackhawks shot for shot, earned a couple of power plays but failed to score.  Then they saw the high powered Blackhawks offence connect for two goals in the final three minutes for a 2-0 lead. Chicago came into the game scoring 26 times in their previous six games. When these teams met at MTS Centre Saturday, the Jets kept Jonathan Toews off the score sheet snapping his five game point streak. After going pointless against Calgary on Sunday, Toews opened the scoring in this game slipping a back hand shot through the pads of Al Montoya at 17:29. It was his eighth of the year. With the first period coming to an end, Patrick Kane (9th) was allowed to close in on Montoya and fired one inside the far post to make it 2-0. The goal came at 19:54. Chicago outshot the Jets 12-11 in the opening period and going 0-2 on the power play again makes special teams a big part of the game. The Blackhawks welcomed Mikael Frolik back to Chicago during a commercial break in the first period. Frolik was part of the Stanley Cup winning team last spring, and received a standing ovation. Frolik acknowledged the crowd with a wave from the bench. Evander Kane took the pre-game skate but did not dress. Kane declared himself ready after the morning skate but Coach Claude Noel elected to give his injury a little more time to heal. For Montoya, it was his second straight start. He grew up in Chicago and said Tuesday he would very much enjoy playing in his home town. If not for some great saves by Montoya, and the Blackhawks Patrick Sharp finding iron on two chances, the second period could have been a complete disaster. As it was the Jets gave up another late goal as 40 minutes ended 3-0 Chicago. The Jets were badly outshot in the first 15 minutes of the period, many of the Blackhawks chances coming on the two power plays they had. After the second successful penalty kill, the Jets did create some chances and seemed to be gaining momentum until Brandon Pirri got in behind the Jets defence, went in alone and wired a shot just under the cross bar for the 3-0 lead. Hawks outshot the Jets 11-7 in the middle frame. Early in the third the Jets again created some chances but a turnover in their own zone, ended with Patrick Sharps fourth of the year making it a 4-0 game. Coach Noel reunited Bryan Little, Andrew Ladd and Blake Wheeler in the third and also changed up two of his defence pairings, Keaton Ellerby with Dustin Byfuglien and Grant Clitsome with Adam Pardy. Toby Enstrom and Zach Bogosian remained together.  The Jets got on the scoreboard with Devin Setoguchi snapping a 13 game goalless stretch with his third of the year. Byfuglien picked up his team leading 10th assist on the play, while initially it appeared as though Ellerby had picked up his first point, they reviewed the goal and it showed an Olli Jokinen tip before it got to Setoguchi. Hawks outshot the Jets 28-25. Post-game Coach Noel further addressed the Kane situation saying decisions made are based on what is best for the player. "Players always want to play. Its up to us to look out for the welfare of the player." As for Kane playing Friday, "Well assess tomorrow, talk to the training staff and go from there." As for the game, Coach Noel showed concern as some of the mistakes made "were the same mistakes we made against them Saturday. You shoot yourself in the foot and its in your net. They are a team that can finish. Theyve scored nine on us in two games." After the win against the Detroit Red Wings, the Jets were again unable to win back to back games. They have not won two in a row since the start of the NHL season. Again the Jets did some good things but turnovers and mental mistakes against Chicago are costly. How would a power play goal in the first period have changed the game? The Jets recorded 34 hits to Chicagos 16, Eric Tangradi with five, Blake Wheeler with four. Mark Scheifele was the Jets best face off man at 50%. Tangradi and Byfuglien each had four shots on goal and at 26:20 Byfuglien lead in ice time. Not dressed for the Jets in this game, Paul Postma, Mark Stuart, Jacob Trouba, Evander Kane, Jim Slater and Zach Redmond. There will be two home games for the Jets this weekend, Nashville in Winnipeg Friday (TSN Jets, TSN 1290) and San Jose Sunday. (TSN Jets, TSN 1290). Cheap Adidas Colorado Avalanche Jerseys . Tomas Kopecky scored the winning goal in the 10th round of a shootout in the Panthers 3-2 victory over the Capitals on Friday night. Kopeckys goal went high over Philipp Grubauer and into the net. It came after the Panthers missed five previous chances to win the game during the shootout. The shootout matched the second-longest in Panthers history. The longest was 11 rounds against the Capitals on Nov. 28, 2007, a 2-1 Florida victory. "Obviously, it feels good, especially to win the game and get that extra point," Kopecky said. "We need every point right now." The Panthers won for the fourth time in five games and snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Capitals. The Caps lost for the first time in four games. Ovechkin was held without a point. He scored in each of the last seven games against the Panthers, and had four goals Tuesday night in a 6-5 overtime victory over Tampa Bay. "Hes one of the hottest players in the league and we know he can turn a game real fast," Panthers coach Peter Horachek said. "As a team we tried to pay attention to him. I think the guys did a really good job." Jonathan Huberdeau, Brad Boyes, and Nick Bjugstad also scored in the tiebreaker for Florida. Aleksander Barkov and Dylan Olsen had regulation goals, and Scott Clemmensen made 23 saves. Clemmensen has had plenty of experience facing Ovechkin and the Capitals. "Hes a Panther killer, has been ever since Ive been here and this is my fifth year," Clemmensen said. "So youre always aware when hes out there." Eric Fehr, Nicklas Backstrom, and Mikhail Grabovski scored shootout goals for Washington. Joel Ward and Backstrom scored in regulation, and Grubauer stopped 39 shots. Washington had only seven shots in the first period, and didnt get its eighth until 9:337 of the second.dddddddddddd That changed quickly after Erik Gudbransons blow to Fehrs head at 16:16 of the second. Troy Brouwer then dropped the gloves with Gudbranson, drawing a fighting penalty. Gudbranson got a match penalty. Fehr returned in the third period. Both teams scored during the resulting 4-on-4 play, and Washington added another goal on the power play. "The guys on our team responded to that," Brouwer said. "I didnt get to see much after that but scoring two goals put us in a good position going into the third period to try to win the hockey game." The Capitals tied it at 1 when Backstrom scored 18 seconds into the 4-on-4 on a wrist shot from the slot. The Panthers answered when Barkov stole the puck near the blue line, brought it to the right circle, and wristed it past Grubauer on the stick side at 17:56. Ward added a power-play goal with 30 seconds left in the second. Originally ruled no-goal during a scrum in front of the net, the officials used a video review to determine the puck crossed the goal line. "I tried to plant myself to get ready for a shot and I saw it kind of leak through the goalie," Ward said. "There was no whistle called so I tried to follow it up and whack at it." Olsens goal started the scoring in the second. His bad-angle shot from low in the left circle got past Grubauer 2:13 into the period for his third goal in his past nine games. "You just see an opening and you throw it on net," Olsen said. "Its been fortunate to go in." The Capitals had a goal disallowed in the opening minute when it was ruled Martin Erat nudged Clemmensen out of the goal and interference was called. NOTES: Backstrom has 10 points in his last six games. ... Florida G Tim Thomas missed the game because of a lower-body injury. He was hurt in practice Thursday. ...
