2K Sports' flagship basketball sim franchise is most famous for its flagrant use of microtransactions and gambling-esque mechanics, but NBA 2K20 MT could be the straw that broke the camel's back. While the latest entry is seeking to up the ante in all regions, from character development all the way through to Hollywood cameos, a recent trailer for MyTeam has been hauled from the show' official station after bringing over 16,000 dislikes.
The reason? Depicted in the video are slot machines, a great deal of fist-pumping as cards are pulled out of packs that were loot, and Wheel of games of chance. It is a tone-deaf trailer which warrants the level of criticism it's attracted -- particularly when you consider the broader context of this microtransaction conversation that has been happening elsewhere in the industry of late.
In fact, the backlash has been so poor that it has prompted European evaluations board PEGI to remark on the situation, considering the title has a family friendly era rating of 3, which many feel is improper given the content of this discharge. "A video game receives the gambling content descriptor in case it comprises moving images that promote and/or instruct the usage of games of chance which are played/carried outside as a traditional way of gaming," the group explained.
