Panthers 24 Steelers 39: 6 winners
www.carolinapanthersteamonline.com , 3 losers in Panthers’ preseason finale loss a 39-24 loss to the Steelers. Thankfully the results of this game don’t matter because the Panthers did not look good at all tonight.Let’s take a look at some winners and losers from tonight’s action.WinnersMose Frazier: I don’t think he’ll make the 53-man roster, but I do believe that Frazier earned himself a spot on the practice squad after his efforts tonight. He looks like he belongs out there, and I think the Panthers would be wise to keep him stashed in case of an emergency.Cameron Artis-Payne: CAP came to play tonight, and it showed in the first quarter. He may have only had 35 rushing yards, but he did that on five carries. For a game that had few bright spots in it, he was one of them. He looked like he wanted to take the No. 3 running back spot, and I think he did. Daeshon Hall: Hall sacked Mason Rudolph on third down to force the Steelers to punt. It was one of the few bright spots of the night for the defense, and it came at a good time for Hall, who has struggled this preseason.Taylor Heinicke: He played well in the first quarter
Carolina Panthers T-Shirt , and I think he played well enough to win the No. 2 quarterback job over Garrett Gilbert. It’s up to the coaches now, as Heinicke did everything he could to convince them that he’s the right man for the job.Kyle Allen: He played pretty well in the second half and might have done well enough to find himself on a practice squad somewhere. It’s hard to really analyze anything since he was playing with and against players who won’t make a 53-man roster, but he showed potential and could get some phone calls this weekend if he doesn’t make the Panthers practice squad.Reggie Bonnafon: Bonnafon performed well in the second half. He hustled down the sideline and stopped a defensive touchdown, and he also found the end zone himself. He made the kind of plays that a guy should make when fighting for a spot on the roster. I don’t think he’ll make the 53, but I think he put himself in the conversation for a place on the practice squad.Panthers 28 Bills 23: 5 winners, 3 losers from Carolina’s preseason win The Carolina Panthers opened the 2018 preseason with a 28-23 come-from-behind win over the Buffalo Bills. While the starters only played a brief amount of time in the first half, it was nice to see some quality play during the short time they were in the game. There were also some areas that definitely need some work, but fortunately we have the rest of the preseason to iron out those wrinkles as we get ready for the regular season opener against the Dallas Cowboys on September 9.Here are five winners and three losers from tonight’s win over the Bills.WinnersTaylor Heinicke, QuarterbackHeinicke made a very good case that he should be the team’s No. 2 quarterback. To be fair
Carolina Panthers Hats , he was playing against backups, but he looked like he belonged out there. He finished the night 7-of-9 for 121 yards and a touchdown, and he looked very impressive while leading the offense. I’m looking forward to seeing him in action with the 1’s and 2’s next week against the Dolphins.Jermaine Carter, LinebackerCarter was all over the place tonight. His chase-down and near-sack of Josh Allen was one of several impressive plays that he made during his time on the field. He ended the night with one tackle and one sack, but his play was much better than his numbers suggest. If he can continue to play like he did tonight he’ll find himself not only on the 53-man roster, but contributing on game day.D.J. Moore, Wide receiverOf course everyone was excited to see what Moore could do on the field, and he showed off his ability in a big way with an impressive catch and run that gained 26 yards and set up a touchdown. He ended the night with four catches for 75 yards, and I have a feeling that we’re just seeing the beginning of what he can bring to the offense. Get excited
Carolina Panthers Hoodie , folks.Christian McCaffrey, Running backThe Panthers have said they want to give McCaffrey the bulk of the touches on offense this year to utilize his versatility. If what we saw tonight is any indication, they should definitely follow up with that plan. McCaffrey picked up some nice yards on a screen pass from Cam Newton in the first quarter, and also scored the first-team offense’s touchdown with a nice run. He did fumble the ball trying to fight for more yards, but luckily the Panthers recovered it and it worked out in the end. Overall, though—I liked what I saw from him tonight.Shaq Thompson, LinebackerThompson showed that the Panthers won’t have to worry too much during the first four weeks of the season while Thomas Davis serves his suspension. Thompson played very well tonight, and also had a nice interception in the first half. I liked what I saw from him and can’t wait to see even more.
